Malachi/Malachi 1:1 - 2:7

Chapter 1

1 The prophetic burden of the word of Hashem, through Malachi.  2 "I loved you," said Hashem, and you said, "How have You loved us?" Was not Esau a brother of Jacob — the words of Hashem — yet I loved Jacob.  3 But I hated Esau and I made his mountains a desolation, and his heritage for the desert serpents.  4 Though Edom said, "We have become destitute, but we shall return and rebuild the ruins"; so said Hashem, Master of Legions, "They may build, but I shall tear down; they shall call them, 'the boundary of wickedness, and the people who infuriated Hashem to eternity.'  5 Your eyes shall see and you shall say, 'Hashem is great beyond the boundary of Israel.' "

6 "A son will honor his father and a slave his master; if I am a Father, where is My honor, and if I am a Master, where is My reverence?" says Hashem, Master of Legions, to you, "O Kohanim who scorn My Name — yet you say, 'How have we scorned Your Name?'  7 You bring abominable bread upon My Altar, and you say, 'How have we abominated You?' — by your saying, 'The table of Hashem is scorned.'  8 And when you bring a blind animal to slaughter, is it not evil? And when you bring a lame or sick animal, is it not evil? Offer it, if you please, to your governor — will he show you favor or will he turn his countenance toward you?" says Hashem, Master of Legions.  9 "And now, if you please, beg Hashem to be gracious to us — this is your doing — will He turn His countenance to any of you?" says Hashem, Master of Legions.

10 "If there were only someone among you who would shut the doors so that you could not kindle upon My Altar in vain! I have no desire for you," says Hashem, Master of Legions, "and I will not accept a meal-offering from your hand.  11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting, My Name is great among the nations, and everywhere is brought up in smoke and brought for My Name's sake, and it is a pure meal-offering, for My Name is great among the nations," says Hashem, Master of Legions.  12 "But you desecrate it by your saying, 'The table of my Lord is abominable,' and by his statement, 'His food is scornful.'  13 You say, 'Behold! — it is so burdensome!' and you sadden Him," says Hashem, Master of Legions, "and you bring stolen, lame, and sick animals and bring one for an offering; shall I accept it from your hand?" says Hashem.  14 "Accursed is the charlatan who has a male in his flock but pledges and slaughters an inferior one to the Lord, for I am a great King," says Hashem, Master of Legions, "and My Name is awesome among the nations."

Chapter 2

1 ''And now, this commandment is upon you, O Kohanim.  2 If you will not listen and if you will not take to heart to render honor to My Name," says Hashem, Master of Legions, "I shall send the curse among you and curse your blessings — indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not take to heart.  3 Behold! — I will rebuke the seed because of you, and scatter dung upon your faces, the dung of your festival offerings; [the sins] will carry you to this.

4 "Know that I have sent this commandment to you so that My covenant would be with Levi," says Hashem, Master of Legions.  5 "My covenant of life and peace was with him, I gave them to him for the sake of the fear with which he feared Me, for he shuddered before My Name.  6 The teaching of truth was in his mouth and no injustice was found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and fairness, and he turned many away from sin.  7 For the lips of a Kohen should safeguard knowledge, and they should seek teaching from his mouth, for he is an agent of Hashem, Master of Legions."
