Yeshayah/Isaiah 27:6 - 28:13, 29:22 - 23    According to the Ashkenazic custom.

Chapter 27

6 Days are coming when Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill the face of the earth like fruit.  7 Has He struck [Israel] as He struck those who struck him, or has He slain him as He slew those who slew him?  8 According to its measure [of sin], He contended against her farmland, stripping it with His strong wind on the day of the east wind.  9 Therefore, through this shall Jacob's iniquity be atoned for, and this shall be the fruit of his sin's removal - when he makes all the altar stones like ground chalkstones, and asheirah-trees and sun-idols shall rise up no more.  10 For the fortified city will be lonely, depopulated and forlorn like the wilderness; there a calf will graze and there it will lie down and consume its branches.

11 When its branch withers it will be broken, women will come and set it aflame, for it was not a discerning nation — therefore its Maker will not show it mercy, and its Creator will not show it graciousness.

12 It will be on that day that Hashem shall thresh from the surging river to the Brook of Egypt, and you will be gathered up one by one, O Children of Israel.  13 And it will be on that day that a great shofar will be blown, and those who are lost in the land of Assyria and those cast away in the land of Egypt will come, and they shall prostrate themselves to Hashem on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Chapter 28

1 Woe! a crown of arrogance is on Ephraim's drunkards and a withering blossom is the glory of his splendor upon the head, which is like a valley of oil, of those who are battered because of wine.  2 Behold! my Lord's strong and powerful [wind] — like a stream of hail, a destructive tempest; mighty, flooding waters — will place [the crown] on the ground with strength.  3 Feet will trample the crown of arrogance of Ephraim's drunkards.  4 And the withering blossom that is the glory of his splendor upon the head, which is like a valley of oil, will be like a fig that is ripe before summer; as soon as an observer sees it, while it is yet in his hand, he will swallow it.

5 On that day, Hashem, Master of Legions, will be the crown of glory and a diadem of splendor for the remnant of His people,  6 and a spirit of judgment for him who sits in judgment, and strength for those who return from the war to the gate.  7 They, too, have erred through wine and staggered through aged wine; Kohen and prophet erred through aged wine, were corrupted by wine, staggered through aged wine, erred in vision, perverted justice.  8 For all tables are full of vomit and filth, with no [clean] place.  9 To whom shall one teach knowledge, who can be made to understand a message? Those weaned from [mother's] milk, removed from breasts.

10 For commandment by commandment and commandment by commandment, measuring line by measuring line and measuring line by measuring line, a bit here and a bit there.  11 For as if with unintelligible speech and with a foreign tongue does one speak to this nation.  12 For He told them - "This is the contentment, give rest to the weary — and this brings satisfaction!" But they desired not to listen.  13 And the word of Hashem became to them like commandment by commandment and commandment by commandment, measuring line by measuring line and measuring line by measuring line, a bit here and a bit there, so that they would go and stumble backward and be broken, be tripped up and caught.

Chapter 29

22 Therefore, so said Hashem, Who redeemed Abraham, to the House of Jacob, "Do not shame Jacob now, and let not his face now turn pale.  23 For when he sees his children, My handiwork, in his midst, they sanctify My Name; and they sanctify the Holy One of Jacob and render strength to the God of Israel!"

Yermiyah/Jeremiah 1:1 - 2:3    According to the Sephardic custom.

Chapter 1

1 The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of the Kohanim who were in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin,  2 to whom the word of Hashem came in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.  3 And so it did in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, until Jerusalem was exiled in the fifth month

4 The word of Hashem came to me, saying,  5 "Before I formed you in the belly I knew you, and before you left the womb I sanctified you; I have set you a prophet unto the nations."

6 But I said, "Alas, my Lord, Hashem/Elohim, I know not how to speak, for I am a child."

7 Hashem said to me, "Do not say, 'I am a child,' for regarding whatever I shall send you, you shall go; and whatever I command you, you shall speak.  8 Do not fear them for I am with you to rescue you — the words of Hashem."  9 And Hashem extended His hand and touched my mouth; and Hashem said to me, "Behold! I have placed My words in your mouth.  10 See, I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, to uproot and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."

11 The word of Hashem came to me, saying, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" And I said, "I see a staff from an almond tree."

12 Hashem said to me, "You have seen well, for I hasten to fulfill My word."

13 The word of Hashem came to me a second time, saying, "What do you see?" I said, "I see a bubbling pot, and its opening is from the north."

14 Hashem said to me, "From the north the evil will be released upon all the inhabitants of the land.  15 For behold! I call to all the families of the kingdoms of the north — the words of Hashem — and each shall place his throne at the entrance of Jerusalem's gates and by all its walls roundabout, and upon all the cities of Judah.  16 I shall speak My judgment with them for all their evil, for having forsaken Me; and they made smoke rise up to false gods, and they prostrated themselves to their handiwork.

17 "You shall gird your loins and stand up, and speak to them everything that I shall command you; do not be frightened of them lest I cause you to be frightened of them.  18 And I — behold! I have made you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and copper walls against the entire land; against the kings of Judah, against its leaders, against its priests, and against the people of the land.  19 They will make war against you but will be unable to defeat you, for I am with you — the words of Hashem — to rescue you."

Chapter 2

1 The word of Hashem came to me, saying,  2 "Go and call out unto the ears of Jerusalem, saying - 'So said Hashem, I recall for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your nuptials, that you followed Me in the Wilderness in an unsown land.'  3 Israel is holy to Hashem, the first of His crop; whoever devours it will be held guilty — evil shall come upon them! — the words of Hashem."
