The IDF, in conjunction with the Shin Bet internal security service, arrested in the PA-controlled city of Shechem the terrorist responsible for the murder of Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal in February.
19-year-old Abed al-Karim Assi, an Israeli Arab from Jaffa had stabbed Ben-Gal at a junction near Ariel on February 6. Ever since the attack, Assi had successfully evaded a massive manhunt designed to apprehend him.
Assi has been handed over to the Shin Bet for interrogation.
The stabbing attack had occurred at a popular hitchhiking spot near Jerusalem Boulevard in Ariel just before 2:30 p.m. Assi stabbed Ben-Gal from the back, penetrating his upper chest and wounding him fatally.
MDA paramedics and IDF medics were dispatched to the scene and treated Ben-Gal before evacuating him in critical condition to Beilinson Medical Center in Petah Tikva. Ben-Gal was declared dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
Assi had fled the scene immediately after the stabbing. An IDF officer who witnessed the attack rammed the terrorist with his car, but failed to neutralize the terrorist.
"When I arrived at the scene, I joined an IDF medical team and provided medical treatment to a 30-year-old man who was unconscious with a stab wound in his upper body. We performed CPR, gave drugs and stopped the bleeding. He is in critical condition," said a medic from MDA.
Witnesses say Ben-Gal ran into the street after he was stabbed and approached a bus, banging on the door calling for help, Walla! reported.
“Terror attack, terror attack, I’ve been stabbed,” Ben-Gal had said before collapsing.
Netanyahu had vowed soon after the attack that Assisi would be brought to justice.
